BAN X in Europe
2024. Videos, prints.

This work reflects on the dispute over online free speech. It centers on the campaign initiated by Cirio with a petition to ban the social media platform X, which is owned by Elon Musk and used to spread his disinformation. Cirio presents his reflections through video essays on contemporary political philosophy, research on regulations for online disinformation, and a series of interventions to promote his petition with provoking messages. The work aims to spark a debate about free speech and the dangers of manipulative social media platforms, particularly at a time when the world's richest man enters politics, using high-tech tactics and subtle communication strategies to influence public opinion. Cirio launched the campaign in September 2024, before Trump's victory in the U.S. elections with Musk's support, following debates about banning TikTok in the U.S., the arrest of Telegram's founder in France, and the banning of X in Brazil. Ultimately, Cirio collaborated with policymakers, lawyers, and activists to take action against Musk's X platform, supported by thousands of people who signed the petition to ban X in Europe.
