We Weren't
2008. Ink-jet prints on canvas. 90x50cm.
In this artwork, three of the most controversial terrorists of the ongoing War on Terror are depicted as Disney villains. The triptych renders a fantasy which conjoins terrorists with villain characters from famous western cartoons, and underlines the manipulations of consensus and dissent by the "Information Operations Roadmap" military program. Nonexistent terrorists have been some of the most wanted, and have been identified as dangerous official enemies. They are true war celebrities with fake names, or alleged leaders of insurgent groups against peace heroes. These identities are permanently the subject of debates about conspiracy theories and are constantly discussed on official mainstream news. These myths have grown on the internet like folk tales, where legends spread fast as part of socio-induced anxiety through conspiracy conjectures constructed by citizen journalists and propaganda by the dominant media structure.
